On Optimal Subarchitectures for Quantum Circuit Mapping

Compiling a high-level quantum circuit down to low-level description that can be executed on state-of-the-art computers is crucial part of the software stack for computing. One step in compiling some device mapping, where transformed such it complies with architecture's limited qubit connectivity. Because search space mapping grows exponentially number qubits, desirable consider as few device's physical qubits possible process. Previous work conjectured suffices only subarchitectures computer composed many used circuit. In this work, we refute conjecture and establish criteria judging whether considering larger parts architecture might yield better solutions problem. We show determining are minimal size, i.e., which no removed without losing optimal solution circuit, very hard Based relaxation optimality, introduce relaxed consideration still maintains optimality practically relevant circuits. Eventually, results two methods computing near-optimal sets subarchitectures$\unicode{x2014}$providing basis efficient solutions. demonstrate benefits novel method by IBM, Google Rigetti.
